Description:
The ancient Romans used copper/bronze coins extensively throughout their global empire. Limited quantities were struck under the Republic with a vast increase in their use seen under the reign of Augustus beginning in the first century. Generally, the bust of the Emperor is depicted on the obverse of these coins while the reverse honors a variety of deities. This coin depicts the goddess Victoria, the goddess of victory, holding a wreath. Victoria was a major part of Roman society. Multiple temples were erected in her honor. When her statue was removed in 382 AD by emperor Gratianus there was much anger in Rome. She was normally worshipped by triumphant generals returning from war. Circa 1st - 4th centuries.
