Description

Carlos II, known as “Carlos the Mad,” became king of Spain at age four in 1665. His early reign was under a regency led by his mother, while Spain struggled with internal corruption and foreign threats, especially from France. The economy declined despite incoming treasure fleets, with bankrupt finances and failing industries. Carlos, unable to produce an heir, named Philip of France as his successor, ending the Spanish Habsburg line and sparking the War of Spanish Succession after his death in 1700. His reign saw poor-quality coinage and notable minting developments, including Mexico City’s authorization to strike gold in 1675. This coin is handset in a Sterling Silver pendant.
