Description

When Carlos II of Spain died without an heir in 1700, he named Philip V, grandson of Louis XIV, as his successor, sparking the War of Spanish Succession. Philip eventually secured the throne, becoming the first Bourbon king of Spain. His rival, Charles VI (then known as Carlos III, the Pretender), held power only in Catalonia before inheriting the Austrian crown in 1711. With his elevation, allies withdrew support, leading to the Treaty of Utrecht, which confirmed Philip V as king. Charles later issued the Pragmatic Sanction to ensure his daughter Maria Theresa’s succession, though she faced wars to claim her inheritance. This coin was handset in a 14kt Gold pendant.
