Description
Philip III, son of Philip II and Anna of Austria, ruled Spain from 1598 to 1621 and also held the Portuguese crown. Though personally virtuous, he was a passive ruler, delegating power to his favorite, the Duke of Lerma. He focused on courtly life while ignoring Spain’s economic issues. His reign saw peace in Western Europe and the expulsion of the Moriscos. Married to Marguerite of Austria, he had eight children, including his successor, Philip IV. Coinage during his reign included silver and gold cobs, with silver croats minted only in Barcelona. This coin was handset in a 14kt pendant.
